Applying my work experience toward a degree

Southern State recognizes the important contribution that lived experience makes in your educational pursuits.  To assist you in fully capitalizing on all the work you have completed outside the classroom, the College offers a Life Experience Credit Program.

A comprehensive description of this program is available through the hyperlink above.  A quick list of steps you can take to begin this process and the most important guidelines are provided below.

Guidelines

  • Qualifying students can earn up to one year (45) academic credits.

  • If transferring to another institution beyond Southern State is in the foreseeable future, be aware that the receiving institution will determine whether to accept the credits that have been granted through life experience.

  • Students must be currently enrolled to receive credit.

  • In order to obtain life experience credit, the student must have already completed (9) credit hours at Southern State.

  • A minimum threshold for experience is typically 5-years before a student should consider applying for life experience credit as a substitute for a particular course.

  • To earn a degree from Southern State, students must complete no less than 30 hours at Southern State.
